All Day Writing Retreats for Faculty
Do you have a writing project on which you’d like to make a good chunk of progress on before the end of the year? Are you working on a grant proposal? Are you trying to make significant headway on starting or finishing up a paper, a report, or other academic writing project? Come to our Writing Retreats!

Our writing retreats offer you a chance to write in the company of other faculty members, in a tranquil, quiet, and beautiful natural setting. We only break for a short lunch and conversation around noon, with an optional short walk and stretch break afterwards.
We alternate these retreats between Jasper Ridge, which is off-campus but still nearby, and the O’Donohue Family Stanford Educational Farm.
The schedule involves uninterrupted individual writing, in the company of others writing quietly (except for lunch). Wi-fi is available – though you may strategically decide not to connect, depending upon the nature of your writing!
The following staff members are typically available for individual consultation during the retreat, as desired:
- Crystal Botham, Director of Research Development, Department of Pediatrics; Director of the Grant Writing Academy, School of Medicine
- Amber Moore, Assistant Director of Research Development & Belonging, Grant Writing Academy, School of Medicine
- Elizabeth Seckel, Director of Strategic Research Development, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine
- Vinita Bharat, Assistant Director of Science Communication & Research Development Training, Department of Pediatrics
- Susan Salkind, Research Development Strategist / Grant Writer, Department of Pediatrics
Coffee/tea, snacks, and lunch are provided for all participating. (Please let us know in advance of any dietary preferences or restrictions.)
Comments from past attendees:
- “Very useful. It allowed/forced me to keep my calendar free and encouraged me to ignore email, to spend ~7 solid hours on writing. Having it at Jasper Ridge rather than on campus was excellent. On campus, it is too easy to hop on one’s bike and return to one’s office in just a few minutes.”
- “I was able to complete and submit a pre-proposal.”
- “It was nice to be away from campus and distractions, and it forced me to spend a concerted 4+ hours with an almost-finished manuscript that I had been sitting on for the past month.”
- “It can be so difficult to make time for progress with writing against the seemingly non-stop stream of small-but-urgent issues. During this session I was able to finish one paper and make a solid start on a second–definitely the most productive writing day I’ve had this quarter!”
- “This was a wonderful opportunity to feel a sense of connection to an academic community here at Stanford.”
- “It [office hours] was incredibly helpful – I was able to talk over big picture strategies for upcoming grants, strategies for approaching new funding sources, and tools and resources for writing more efficiently.”
If you need a disability related accommodation to participate in this event (captioning, sign language interpreting, Braille, etc.), please contact the Diversity & Access Office at disability.access@stanford.edu or 650.725.0326. Requests should be received at least one week prior to the event.
Faculty Writing Retreat events are first shared with UML, UTL, NTLR faculty through an early-career faculty list serv. If you believe you should be on this list serv, please email Amber Moore at armoore@stanford.edu.
Non-early career faculty and CEs will have an opportunity to fill the remaining spots we announce through our grant_writing_academy mailing list.
