Faculty Reviewers
The Stanford Biosciences Grant Writing Academy supports fellowship and grant writing for postdocs and graduate students. This multi-faceted program aims to support more and better submissions to NIH and other funding agencies. We hope that you will encourage participation of your trainees in this effort to broaden and deepen their career and professional skills, increase funding to Stanford, and provide transformative training to our students and fellows.
To ensure success of the Grant Writing Academy’s Proposal Bootcamp (Spring BIOS 263 and BIOS 279; Autumn BIOS 242), we are requesting that you serve as a Faculty Reviewer as outlined below:
- We are requesting faculty participate in one or more 2-hour Faculty Review Workshops. The workshops do not require preparation or follow-up.
- Faculty feedback at the workshops is a critical component of the program. During these workshops, participants provide their one-page Specific Aims document. Faculty Reviewers give constructive comments and suggestions to strengthen the proposals.

Our Faculty Review Workshops (2-hours) follow a structured format which provides fast, organized, and effective feedback — ensuring maximum benefit for your time. Trainees bring copies of their one-page Specific Aims documents (BIOS 242 or BIOS 263) or one-page Project Summary documents (BIOS 279). This draft will have already have incorporated changes based on feedback from the trainee’s faculty mentor and in-class peer review. The Faculty Reviewers give constructive, prioritize (most important feedback first) comments and suggestions to strengthen the proposal. The workshops do not require preparation or follow-up by the Faculty Reviewers. Workshops generally have two Faculty Reviewers, up to 4 trainees (postdocs and/or graduate students) and 1 Grant Coach to facilitate the workshop. Most workshops will be in the basement rooms of CCSR. Download handout (we will provide this at the workshop).
Please remember that effective feedback is:
- Prioritized (more important issues first)
- Supportive (respectful, attentive to writer’s purposes)
- Specific (pointing to concrete features of the text, offering explicit reasoning)
- Descriptive or questioning (non-judgmental, reader-based)
- Future-Oriented (focused on next steps, what is possible)

Course participants value the Faculty Reviewer’s feedback and 97% agreed the workshops are an important component of the Proposal Bootcamp course (Bootcamp participants 2014-2018). Faculty feedback improves the trainees’ Specific Aims, experimental design, and overall proposal structure and aesthetics.
- “The faculty review workshops are fantastic and maybe a once-in-a-life kind of experience”
- “I actually restructured my proposal as a result and hope to collaborate with one of the faculty experts”
- “Having perspective of people who reviews these grants is helpful and reassuring”
- “I tried to choose workshops that had one faculty that was in my field and one that wasn’t and I found hearing their insights on my documents from both of their different knowledge sets was super useful”
Feedback helps Trainees!
Bootcamp participants report faculty feedback at the workshops improves their Specific Aims. Faculty feedback also improves the proposal’s experimental design as well as overall proposal structure and aesthetics, although faculty only look at 1-page Specific Aims!
