BIOS 432: Boost your Research Productivity with Design Thinking Tools

1-unit | Fridays, 11:00am – 12:20pm

  • Harness creativity to make your research more enjoyable.
  • Think outside of the box to identify new ways to tackle your research questions and convey results.
  • Use mixed-media approaches to support intentional storytelling, supportive research teams, and creative confidence. Each student will receive a free copy of the Creativity in Research book along with a notebook to document their progress!

*Recommended for graduate students in their 2nd year or higher.

 

BIOS 450: Storytelling in Science: Grants, papers, and the public

1-unit | Wednesdays, 10:30am – 11:50am

Did you know that people do research on how scientists talk to one another, and how they talk to the public?

Curious about the most-effective ways to talk and write about your science,  so you’re understood by any audience?

Interested in the philosophy of science, and in learning how we know what we know?

This class is for you!

In this new course, we will draw on science rhetoric and science communication research to formulate compelling, accurate scientific narratives that most effectively reach your intended audience – whether a grant-review panel, the readers of your next paper, the millions on TikTok, or your friend across the dinner table. 

*Recommended for graduate students in their 2nd year or higher.

 

BIOS 451: Introduction to Grant Writing: Building Skills for Research Funding

1-unit | Fridays, 10:30am – 11:50am

Are you curious about grants but don’t know where to start? Let’s kickstart your research career and learn about the exciting world of grant writing!

In this course you will:

  • Learn about different types of grants and how to identify funding sources
  • Discuss the benefits of writing grants beyond just the funding
  • Gain practical experience in turning research ideas into fundable projects
  • Hear from guest speakers about their grant writing experiences

The course will include a mix of lectures, mini projects, guest speakers, and group discussions.

*Recommended for graduate students in their 1st or 2nd year.

 

Fall and Spring Course(s):

BIOS 431: Implement a Writing Practice to Increase Scientific Productivity

2-units, offered fall and winter, can repeat for 1-unit twice

In this course you will:

  • Meet a community of peer writers
  • Learn about best practices for productive writing
  • Actively develop a writing practice
  • Reflect on what works for you and make a writing plan
  • Develop positive associations with writing

This course is for graduate students in the biosciences who want to learn about best practices for developing writing skills and implementing a writing routine.
