R2G2: What to Say to Program Officers

Contacting Program Officers at the NIH, NSF, or other funding agencies can seem intimating but Program Officers at these agencies can help you gain a better understanding of the sponsor’s needs and how your research can best support it. At this R2G2 session, Program Officer Dr. Thomas Greenwell from NIH and Senior Advisor Dr. Bruce Kramer from NSF will describe their respective roles and how they help junior faculty succeed. Stanford Assistant Faculty Drs. Vinicio de Jesus Perez and David Camarillo will highlight best practices for interacting with Program Officers and answer questions about strategies for contacting Program Officers.
Speakers:
Thomas Greenwell PhD, Program Officer at NIH directs the National Eye Institute program on retinal neuroscience.
Bruce Kramer PhD, Program Director and Senior Advisor for Manufacturing in the Division of Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation and the point of contact at the NSF for the National Advanced Manufacturing Program.
Vinicio de Jesus Perez MD, Stanford Associate Professor of Medicine (Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine). Dr. de Jesus Perez aims to identify new therapeutic targets to treat pulmonary hypertension and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
David Camarillo PhD, Stanford Assistant Professor of Bioengineering and, by courtesy, of Neurosurgery and of Mechanical Engineering. Dr. Camarillo is an expert in instrumentation and biomechanisms whose research interests include medical technology designed to prevent traumatic brain injury, prediction of embryo viability, and cardiovascular robotic surgery.
Route to Getting Grants (R2G2) is a seminar series specially designed for junior faculty (target audience is Instructors or Faculty). Sessions cover all aspects of grant writing, delivered through panel sessions, workshops and focused talks. R2G2 will also provide unique networking opportunities, enabling cross faculty collaborations and multidisciplinary partnerships. R2G2 ensures that junior faculty have all the tools and strategies to lead them to grant success and on to independent research careers.
