About the Presenters:
Lauren Goins, PhD is an Assistant Professor at Stanford University School of Medicine in the Developmental Biology Department. The Goins lab aims to understand how cells make decisions. Work from the lab tackles the major unsolved issue in hematopoietic development: how extracellular cues coordinate with the intracellular cell division machinery to influence cell fate decisions and ultimately produce the vast repertoire of blood cell types in the correct proportions.
Megan Mayerle, PhD is the Associate Director and Chief Operating Officer of the Beckman Center for Molecular and Genetic Medicine at Stanford, where she oversees administrative, financial, and operational strategy for technology development, research, and education programs that support investigators across campus. She earned her PhD at Johns Hopkins University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UCSF. In 2018, she joined the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, where she led multiple successful institutional training grants, oversaw scientific programming and communications, and mentored trainees and faculty in scientific writing and grant preparation. She then served as Associate Director of Research Development, Finance, and Administration for the Baxter Laboratory for Stem Cell Biology, overseeing finances, research development and grant administration, and space and operations planning while serving as a science writer for the Blau lab. In her current role, Megan partners with scientific leadership to guide long-range planning, manages the Beckman Scientific Technology Cores, and continues to mentor junior researchers and write and edit scientific manuscripts and grant proposals.
Sarah Heilshorn, PhD is the Rickey/Nielsen Professor of Materials Science and, by courtesy, of Bioengineering and Chemical Engineering. Dr. Heilshorn’s interests include biomaterials in regenerative medicine, engineered proteins with novel assembly properties, microfluidics and photolithography of proteins, and synthesis of materials to influence stem cell differentiation. Current projects include tissue engineering for spinal cord and blood vessel regeneration, designing injectable materials for use in stem cell therapies, and the design of microfluidic devices to study the directed migration of cells (i.e., chemotaxis).
