NIH Director’s New Innovator Award – Funding opportunities for unusually creative early stage investigators


Elizabeth Seckel, M.A., is the Director of Research Development in the Department of Medicine, as well as the Director for the new Big Ideas in Medicine Program, a department initiative to accelerate visionary science and innovation across disciplines and career stages. Liz has helped secure over $150M from public and private funding entities to advance the science of precision medicine and improve public health, and received several awards and distinctions both for her scientific work as well as her commitment to philanthropy.

Dr. Daniel Herschlag, Ph.D., is a Professor of Biochemistry and, by courtesy, of Chemical Engineering. The overarching goal of his research is to understand the fundamental behavior of RNA and proteins and, in turn, how these behaviors determine and impact biology and how it has evolved. His lab takes an interdisciplinary approach, spanning and integrating physics, chemistry and biology, and employing a wide range of techniques.

Dr. Kyle G. Daniels, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Genetics and, by courtesy, of Neurosurgery. Kyle’s lab is interested in harnessing the principles of modularity to engineer receptors and gene circuits to control cell functions. The lab will use synthetic biology, medium- and high-throughput screens, and machine learning to: (1) Engineer immune cells to achieve robust and durable responses against various cancer targets, (2) Coordinate behavior of multiple engineered cell types in cancer, autoimmune disease, and payload delivery, (3) Control survival, proliferation, and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and immune cells, and (4) Explore principles of modularity related to engineering receptors and gene circuits in mammalian cells.
Route to Getting Grants (R2G2) is specially designed for early-career faculty at Stanford. Sessions cover all aspects of grant writing, delivered through panel sessions, workshops and focused talks. R2G2 also provides unique networking opportunities, enabling cross faculty collaborations and multidisciplinary partnerships. R2G2 ensures that early-career faculty have all the tools and strategies to lead them to grant success and on to independent research careers.
