R2G2: Engineering and Medicine Faculty Writing Retreat
Do you have a writing project on which you’d like to make a good chunk of progress on before the end of the year? Are you working on a grant proposal? Are you trying to make significant headway on starting or finishing up a paper, a report, or other academic writing project? Come to an all-day writing retreat co-sponsored by SoE’s Engineering Research Administration and SoM’s Grant Writing Academy!
Monday, March 20, 2023 | 9:30am – 3:30 pm PST | Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve
Register Here!
This writing retreat will offer you a chance to write in the company of other faculty members, in the tranquil, quiet, and beautiful natural setting of Jasper Ridge (off-campus but still nearby). We will break for a short lunch and conversation around noon, with the option of a short walk and stretch break after lunch.
The schedule involves individual writing, in the company of others writing quietly (except for lunch). Wi-fi is available – though you may strategically decide not to connect, depending upon the nature of your writing.
Coffee/tea, snacks, and lunch will be provided for all participating. (Please let us know in advance of any dietary preferences or restrictions.)
Comments from past attendees:
- “Very useful. It allowed/forced me to keep my calendar free and encouraged me to ignore email, to spend ~7 solid hours on writing. Having it at Jasper Ridge rather than on campus was excellent. On campus, it is too easy to hop on one’s bike and return to one’s office in just a few minutes.”
- “I was able to complete and submit a pre-proposal.”
- “It was nice to be away from campus and distractions, and it forced me to spend a concerted 4+ hours with an almost-finished manuscript that I had been sitting on for the past month.”
- “It can be so difficult to make time for progress with writing against the seemingly non-stop stream of small-but-urgent issues. During this session I was able to finish one paper and make a solid start on a second–definitely the most productive writing day I’ve had this quarter!”
- “This was a wonderful opportunity to feel a sense of connection to an academic community here at Stanford.”
Route to Getting Grants (R2G2) is specially designed for junior faculty at Stanford. Sessions cover all aspects of grant writing, delivered through panel sessions, workshops and focused talks. R2G2 also provides unique networking opportunities, enabling cross faculty collaborations and multidisciplinary partnerships. R2G2 ensures that junior faculty have all the tools and strategies to lead them to grant success and on to independent research careers.
